Who Actually Likes Hillary Clinton?

8/8/06, 6:17 pm EST

Hillary Clinton

For a catalogue of Hillary’s sins — imitating Richard Nixon chief among them — check out the new installment of “The Low Post,” Matt Taibbi’s new, weekly column for RollingStone.com.

“Hillary Clinton has taken an enormous amount of abuse over the years,” Taibbi writes. “But her basic problem is that she’s deserved all of it.”

OK, fine, but who are Hillary’s fans? Taibbi hazards this guess:

Hillary [has] finally complet[ed] her self-propelled transformation into just another soulless stuffed suit willing to do anything to keep a job. There are thousands of these types in Washington, huge crowds of faceless drones in glasses and blue suits, each raised on DVD boxed sets of The West Wing and each willing to suck off a whole field of racehorses for the right internship or committee appointment. Collectively they represent the least interesting group of people on the planet Earth, and once-compelling Hillary is their champion now.

Anything worse than Bush would be Rove….Or Cheney…Or McCain(suck it up)….Or Hastert….Or Giuliani-too tired to look up his name-(the silent partner)….Or Frist…Rice…Or any Republican-they are walking disasters and criminals….

mikie | 8/9/2006, 11:10 am EST

I actually had some respect for this lady when she was First Lady. Her stump speaches said all the right things. Then, she was elected into a position to DO the right things. I guess I’m still waiting to see one of them! m

You can see the wide-eyed Democrats netroots freaking out over Taibbi; they still don’t know what to do with Hilary, because by and large, they have ceased to be ideologically-driven and are closing in fast on the same political opportunism that has marked the careers of the K-Street ghouls.

If they swing around and decide to back her, forget it. As Ripley says in Aliens, “this, all this bullshit? You can kiss all of this goodbye.” If you don’t think it could happen, go right now to your favorite left-wing site and see how they stumble over criticizing her since she shat on Rumsfeld.

Taibbi puts his finger on it; a moment where plain-faced power erased the vestiges of potential political change. Come back, Howard Dean, at least you are corruptible in a way I can respect.

Anonymous | 8/9/2006, 12:15 pm EST

maybe now people will realize that this is a neo-liberal world and democrats, republicans… they are all the same. Truly all the same, because they love to go to war.

Its all about individual pursuit of greed and one world rhetoric at all costs. There isn’t even a hint of an attempt to look at things peacably. That’s why democrats can look at Hillary as a great replacement, instead of a pro-war senator who’s old law firm is counsel for WalMart.

Do feel bad for her personally, though. If she does run, the republicans will say things about her that sailors in a bangkok whorehouse would be embarrassed to repeat. None of it will be true and none of it will matter. Of course, too many democrats will read an article like this and vote for McCain, since at least he’s honest and at least he earned his military authority.

Ryan | 8/9/2006, 2:05 pm EST

I know this is a rock n roll site, but I don’t really think its cool to refer to Senator Clinton’s “rusty vagina” or to talk about senators lining up to give BJs to race horses. Maybe that’s just me.

Eddie Torres | 8/9/2006, 2:22 pm EST

Glad to see Taibbi finally return from the swamp.

Regarding the Privilege Party, Taibbi in the past has indicated that choices like Hillary vs. McCain and Dean vs. Rove don’t save voters’ pension plans or keep their jobs in town. But voters either fall for it or just stay home.

Looking forward to more.

CR | 8/9/2006, 3:42 pm EST

once again, we are way off-base on what is important in a leader. i would like to see a listing of how she voted on specific issues, and actually judge her on her political actions, not if she ‘looks maternal’ or not. but then again, i’d like to do that with all candidates. i wish some computer geek out there would come up with a way to catalog all the votes on each issue for each congress person, then post it online so we can actually make an informed decision for a change.

Ryan | 8/9/2006, 4:46 pm EST

JR, I think you’re defense of Senator Clinton’s vote for the war is a little disingenuous. There was a bevy of available information that cast doubt on the existence of WMD in Iraq and a multitude of stories in Time, Newsweek, the NY Times and the Washington Post that reported Cheney’s men bullying the CIA and military intelligence for more “fanicful” intelligence, let’s say.
Also, over 1,000,000 Americans came out week after week and month after month to protest the march to war. While some of these were doves through-and-through, many (such as myself) were more concearned about the lack of good intelligence and the lack of UN backing. Just because SOME folks got suckered or just weren’t paying attention doesn’t mean they can rewrite history by erasing the inconvenient truths.

S. Mix-a-Lot | 8/9/2006, 5:25 pm EST

I love Hillary because I like big butts and I simply cannot lie.

RC | 8/9/2006, 6:17 pm EST

I would sincerely like to know why you conisder Tom Friedman a “dipshit”.

Dave | 8/10/2006, 1:03 am EST

RC, he calls Friedman a “dipshit” because he dares–the BASTARD, where does he find the NERVE?–to hazard an optimistic bone in his body for the idea that a foreign power could hypothetically overthrow a totalitarian government in defiance of international opinion and help put something better in its place. His hypothesis–nay, conviction–is that Democrats supported the war purely for political gain and are currently attributing its failure to Bush–and not to the very idea of the invasion of Iraq itself–again, for political gain. As a collorary, he believes that Friedman is an enabler of such, as he so eloquently puts it, “soulless stuffed suits,” and as such, persistent rejects the tenets of historical determinism solely so people will continue to read his column (as opposed to fellow New York Times-er Bob Herbert, who expressed Taibbi’s sentiments even more vitriolically this Monday).

Dave | 8/10/2006, 1:13 am EST

Nowadays, it’s a routine thing for us moderates, non-ideologues, multi-issue voters, and/or pragmatists to be characterized as “dipshits,” “Hillary,” and worse. Well, we can take that. This is, after all, a battle of ideas. What we absolutely do not, and will not, tolerate, are bullshit charges from Taibbi and company that the convictions we hold are “fake” and that we express them purely for “political gain.” Not only are such charges offensive, they are also quite ridiculous. The fact of the matter is, some of us believe that the war in Iraq WAS morally justifiable, but that it DID fail precisely because of Bush, and that’s just an opinion certain people are going to have to live with. If Taibbi and Herbert want to excoriate me for my views, I can take it. Just do not question their authenticity. Such behavior does not become an adult political discussion.

Dave | 8/10/2006, 2:05 am EST

Then again, if Taibbi talks BACK to this blog–well, then, I welcome him to correct my, er, assumption of his views on Friedman. When I wrote that, I for some reason assumed he didn’t talk back. ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME, as the salesmen say. Or just an ASS out of ME, as it were.

Taibbi's article | 8/10/2006, 6:25 am EST

Taibbi’s article
This is three pages of no new ideas, no new insights, no new anything. I found it to be just blasted, poor writing and complaining.
His last paragraph on page 2 pretty much summed up his own writing.
No thanks.

Laura | 8/10/2006, 11:14 am EST

I am a fan of Hillary, and no she has NOT deserved any of the abuse she has taken, and fuck the whole lot of you who hate her. You only motivate me to support her even more. C CO, you ought to be castrated. You certainly prove that even “liberal” “men” can be equally sexist, mysogynist pigs (sorry for insulting pigs). Are you so insecure in your masculinity that you are threatened by a strong, powerful woman? It seems obvious to me that you are. I would wish for you to get your dick cut off if in fact you had one, you worthless, pathetic punk. Go to hell motherfucker.

pete | 8/10/2006, 3:35 pm EST

Matt great writing. Good to see you putting your Hingham education to work! Keep it up!

THE Andrew Meyer | 8/10/2006, 4:40 pm EST

Exactly right. Excellent article.

Dave | 8/10/2006, 11:14 pm EST

I have to make a confession to make, Ryan: I was actually being sarcastic with that fake lambast on Friedman. “Dipshits” like Friedman are actually a breath of fresh air for me. When a guy manages to piss off Molly Ivins AND Michelle Malkin on the same day, you know he’s on to something.

mark | 8/11/2006, 12:54 am EST

I agree with almost everything Taibbi says here. Progressive voters here in New York, would have appreciated his mentioning that Hillary has actually been forced to endure a primary here in New York and that her challenger’s name is Jonathan Tasini who is a true progressive.

Don’t agree entirely with his misanthropic assessment of American voters. Unlike him, most folks are not paid to observe and comment upon the political system full time. They would do the right thing if given the chance. That is why the people behind Hillary work so hard at denying Americans a choice. I do agree, however, that the helplessness that they feel induces them to rationalize it.

Hallzee | 8/11/2006, 10:54 am EST

Hillary for President?

Be afraid, Be very afraid.

Love Bush or Hate Bush. He doesn’t change his views and you know what you are going to get.

Hillary? Remember she’ a Clinton. Mark my words, she will change her stripes according to the polls and whatever is best for her political survival.

Obviously Bush can give a shit what the polls say.

Hey Laura,
What guy hurt you? Such hostility and anger. You sound like, Hmmmmm let me think, Hillary.

Remember, just because you scream loud doesn’t mean your a strong woman. It means your annoying. Which is probably why you hate men so much because they keep dumping your ass!

Capitalist Pig | 8/11/2006, 5:31 pm EST

Let them eat cake – Let’s see worse than Bush..It’s spelled Jimmy Carter(Totally failure), Lyndon Johnson(The Man who dug us in deep in Vietnam), JFK (The Man who started Vietnam, not to mention the Bay of Pigs fiasco). And of course no dumbacrat has ever been convicted of crimes while in office..no wait William “Cold Cash” Jefferson is a dem.

Laura – Since you love strong women, I would have to assume you adore Margaret Thatcher, a truly strong woman and great leader. Or do you only love strong leftist women?

And to all the lefties who scream about Bush and his secrecy. Well I have to remind you that Hillary’s health care reform was drafted behind closed doors, no press, and only who she invited got to attend. Sounds secret to me(not to mention very liberal..actually very socialist).

C Co… aka I Smell Propaganda – Laura says you are a liberal man. You a lib? You fooled me.

Hallzee | 8/11/2006, 9:11 pm EST

Capatlist Pig,
Remind me, Did Hillary’s secret Health Plan work? Oh wait, NO! Because her and the rest of the Left are still blaming Bush for lack of Government Provided Health Care in this country.

Thank you for bringing that up!

They never have an answer for that one.

Capitalist Pig | 8/11/2006, 9:53 pm EST

Hallzee – Glad to be of service.

reddy | 8/15/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Matt … this is brilliant. I totally agree with your analysis on Hillary and yeah that dipshit fried-man as well !!
Friedman couches his analysis in a matter-of-fact kinda style thats deceiving. He stomps on the truth when necessary to buffet his argument and his ‘moral’ hand-wringing is so friggin disingenuous it reeks.

C Co... aka I Smell Propaganda | 8/15/2006, 9:19 pm EST

Wow Laura, you made no points and threatened to cut off my privates (you better get a big knife), nicely done. Well I’m not a liberal, I’m moderate. And my beef with Hillary is that she’s a racist, extremist, would be a bad leader, and used her cheating husband to get elected instead of dumping him like any other woman who hears they’ve been cheated on with half a dozen other women would have! So much for girl power. There are plently of good women politicians, but Hillary isn’t one of them. Don’t make this about sex.

GoldBug | 8/17/2006, 11:45 am EST

Nice job Matt. Keep up the good work! If you haven’t yet, check out the book “Empire of Debt” by Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin…dovetails very nicely with what you’re getting at…the flailings, bread and circuses of an empire in decline. Looking forward to seeing your stuff more regularly (R.I.P. NY Press).

Flip | 8/23/2006, 7:48 pm EST

Hillary being nominated in ‘08 WILL sound the death knell of the Democratic party…believe it. Regardless of your opinion of her, there are WAY too many people, both R or D, Blue or Red etc that will vote for ANYONE that runs against Hillary…hell Nixon could run and whip her ass…and he’s dead! Why? because she is too damn controversial.

Jake | 8/29/2006, 2:00 am EST

If nominated, Hilary would lose before the National Convention is over. It’s not that she’s a woman, it’s that no one likes her. She’s too “stuck up” for todays America. Doesn’t matter what we need, and it hasn’t mattered for a long time.

not even her family:-)!! she finds support amongst hacks who have no place to land, and a habd full of women whom, for whatever reason, view her as a role model.
aside from this tragic figure’s persona, there’s a host of litigation still out there around whitewater, ms. flowers, and others.
with all of this republic’s problems, “hill” just can’t weigh in as one of ‘em.
