Bush’s Islamic Ignorance

8/4/06, 5:28 pm EST

Raw Story is reporting that president Bush didn’t know Shiite from Sunni before he made the decision to invade Iraq:

A year after his “Axis of Evil” speech before the U.S. Congress, President Bush met with three Iraqi Americans, one of whom became postwar Iraq’s first representative to the United States. The three described what they thought would be the political situation after the fall of Saddam Hussein. During their conversation with the President, Galbraith claims, it became apparent to them that Bush was unfamiliar with the distinction between Sunnis and Shiites.

[Peter] Galbraith reports that the three of them spent some time explaining to Bush that there are two different sects in Islam–to which the President allegedly responded, “I thought the Iraqis were Muslims!”

Just shoot me.

Georgie boy reminds me more and more of the kids in those anti-pot comercials where the school nurse is translating for the “pothead”
Kid: “Yesterday, my friends talked me into smoking some weed. Today they said I should try to fit my fist in my mouth…it fit, but, now I can’t get it out…..I’m so stupid.”
George: “Yesterday Donnie, Karl, and Dick talked me into changing the world in Gods image. For the election, they said it would help if I put the Religious Right in my pocket. It worked, but, now I cant get my troops out of the desert, or my head out of my ass”.
Any better ones….I’d love to hear them.

When Bush met Muslim leaders in Bali in 2003, during a 3-hour visit to Indonesia on his way from the Philippines to Australia, he still didn’t understand the Shi’a/Sunni divide.

of all the things to complain about this one is so old. it was reported ages ago that kanaan makiya had to explain to the president that there were shia and sunni branches.

this is way old news.

Old Man: here’s what Wikipedia had to say about Shia and its distinctions from Sunni Islam:

“Shi’a Islam, also Shi’ite Islam or Shi’ism (Arabic: ????? ?, transliterated Shi‘ah; Persian: ????? ?) is the second largest denomination of the religion of Islam. Shi’a Muslims adhere to what they consider to be the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the religious guidance of his family whom they refer to as the Ahlul Bayt. Thus, Shi’as consider the first three ruling Sunni Caliphs a historic occurance and not something attached to faith. The singular/adjective form is Shi`i (Arabic: ????.) and refers to a follower of the Ahlul Bayt and of Ali ibn Abi Talib (Imam Ali) in particular.

Shi’a Muslims believe that Muhammad’s family (the Imams) were the best source of knowledge about the Qur’an, Islam, and Emulation (the best-qualified teachers of Islam after Muhammad), and the most trusted carriers and protectors of Muhammad’s Sunnah (traditions).
In particular, Shi’a Muslims recognize the succession of Ali (Muhammad’s cousin, son-in-law, the first young man to convert to Islam—second person only to Muhammad’s wife Khadija—and the male head of the Ahl al-Bayt or “people of the [Prophet's] house”) as opposed to that of the caliphate recognized by Sunni Muslims. Shi`a Muslims believe that Ali was appointed successor by Muhammad’s direct order on many occasions, and that he is therefore the rightful leader of the Muslim faith pursuant to the Prophet’s wishes.
This difference between following either the Ahl al-Bayt (Muhammad’s family) or the Caliph Abu Bakr has shaped Shi`ah and Sunni views on some of the Qur’an, the Hadith (personalities in Islamic history), and other areas by extension. For instance, the collection of Hadith venerated by Shi’a Muslims is centered around narrations by members of the Ahl al-Bayt, while some Hadith by narrators not belonging to the Ahl al-Bayt are not included (those of Abu Huraira, for example).
Regardless of the dispute about the Caliphate, Shi’as recognize the authority of the Shi’a Imam (also called Khalifa Ilahi) as a religious authority, though different sects within Shi’a Islam dispute the rightful succession of this Imam and the current rightful successor (Twelvers, Ismalis, and Zaydis, for instance).

Wow, who cares? I respect the beliefs of any religious denomination except those that believe killing any opponent of your beliefs is the right thing to do. Just because it is part of another countries religious factions doesn’t mean I have to be tolerant of something so idiotic. The fighting among themselves is stupid and we will not be able to make them stop by giving them a “time out”.
