Charles Barkley: “I Was a Republican Until They Lost Their Minds”

7/20/06, 4:29 pm EST

The Round Mound of Rebound, who only a few years ago was rumored to be a top Republican contender for governor of Alabama, has defected.

Barkley made is Democratic proclivities known after John “Don’t Call Me Cougar” Mellencamp offended former veep Dan “I Spell it ‘Potatoe’” Quayle by dedicating a recent performance to: “all the poor people who’ve been ignored by the current administration.”

“He’s right,” Sir Charles said in an recent interview. “The word conservative means discriminatory practically. It’s a form of political discrimination. What do the Republicans run on? Against gay marriage and for a war that makes no sense. A war that was based on faulty intelligence. That’s all they ever talk about. That and immigration. Another discriminatory argument for political gain.”

Reality bites. It is a fact (albeit a necessary one) that politicians at any level of government are of highly-educated, moneyed, privileged backgrounds. Even the most left-wing (?!!?) Democrat cannot possibly relate to the condition of poverty. At least, not in such a fashion that would allow for the proposal of concrete solutions to something they do not understand. (there is no “been there; done that”). The cycle continues, unabated.

Charles Barkley is a better rebounder than George W. Bush

Candi | 7/20/2006, 9:22 pm EST

Dan Quayle is so far to the right he lives in a fantasy world where everybody is rich, straight, white and never have babies out of wedlock…go figure?!

badass | 7/20/2006, 9:44 pm EST

Yeah, there have been some great guys from the left..

Read up on the late Paul Wellstone. He was a true man of the people.

Mit | 7/21/2006, 11:35 am EST

Why anyone would give Charles Barkley the time of day when it comes to political opinion is beyond me. Have you heard this guy on television. I honestly think he has about an 8th grade education level, not to mention an awful golf swing.

evan | 7/21/2006, 12:57 pm EST

mit- barkleys actually fairly intelligent and if he didnt go beyond a high school education (I really dont know if he did or didnt) its probably because he came from the wrong side of the tracks. Itd be nice if we could all get into Yale from the elite Phillips Andover Academy with a mere C average because our daddy was head of the CIA.

Lincoln | 7/21/2006, 9:19 pm EST

Sir Charles went pro after three years at Auburn. I may not place any credence in what Barkley says, but as a citizen of this great nation, he’s as entitled as we all are to pan or praise politicians to his heart’s content.

John | 7/25/2006, 7:13 pm EST

Barkley can’t even speak proper english…now he’s going to tell me how to vote??

murphy | 7/26/2006, 9:36 am EST

Hello ? W can’t even speak regular English, let alone “proper” English and he’s the freakin’ president !

Sir Charles, at least in this instance, speaks for me !

Sam | 7/27/2006, 11:58 am EST

What authority does Charles have to talk about politics. Actually conservative means that you don’t want the government interfering with your life and reaching into your pockets every minute for tax money. How is immigration control discriminative? All we are doing is trying to protect the law and make sure that our tax paying citizens dont ahve to pay money for people who are here illegally and steal job from americans.

Pat | 7/27/2006, 12:52 pm EST

Charles’ story is a great American one. He grew up in a rural area with few breaks, played well beyond his “skills” and was an insufferable ass until he chose to turn a moment of stupidity into a positive, life-changing moment of change. He’s smart and insightful, and willing to laugh at himself. Whether he ran as a D or an R, I would listen to what he has to say and learn something. If you cannot look beyond the superficial to see that, that suggests that you have a shortcoming, not him. And yes, that’s one ugly golf swing, Charles.

I think Charles has a lot to offer and sincerely wants to help people. However, he has millions of dollars and is friends with other millionaires. Could he not help more people without getting into politics? We have been trying to help poor people since the beginning of time but yet we still have poor people. I’m not sure what his plan is. I don’t think just giving money to poor people is the answer. Education and scholarships would help. i would like to hear more about his ‘gameplan’.

Strom Thurmond | 7/31/2006, 10:01 am EST

Barkley also realizes that his VP Cheney voted against the civil rights act. How could anyone call themselves “ethical” vote for such a regime with the VP voting record?

Are all Republicans or conservatives reality-challenged? Does anyone have an excuse to make the continual lame apologies for Bush and his inept administration…???

What does the perpetual tax-cutting clown have to do to further endanger us and fail to provide for us…..

The next great depression or World War III may hit America but the Bush loyalists are so happy that the Inheritance tax will go away or that the tax cuts are juicy for the two per cent getting wealthy…

Until the right grows up and discovers what Bush is doing to us, the same disasters will occur and there is not adequate infra-structure to aid us or protect us…

Hmm. Where did the money go? Why is every governmental agency now incompetent since Bushdum?

Why does Halliburton prosper but Katrina victims and New Orleans remain neglected and no signs of rebuilding unless private organizations or citizens do it without any funding from the current administration? Where did all the money go? Tax cuts for the rich.

Funneling government agency money into Halliburton, Republican “campaign” efforts, oil execs pockets????

Under Bush(No pun intended)FEMA does not work and the money is absent to provide care for anyone…

Ineptness and theft…..

John, regarding your comment about Barkley and his command of the english language” clearly English is not even needed to be elected to run our country.

Klaatu | 9/7/2006, 7:11 pm EST

I don’t think Bush is a real conservative. Real conservatives are for smaller, less-obtrusive government. Real conservatives do not attack other countries unless they have attacked us. Real conservatives protect the borders. They respect the rights of states to determine their own laws within constitutional limits. Real conservatives respect civil rights and value liberty even more than security. GW has disappointed me. But you know what? I’m still glad Gore and Kerry are not president. The Dems had better get their act together because I don’t see anyone I want to vote for.

Krystal | 2/8/2008, 12:22 pm EST

I think Ron Paul is a true conservative. If Charles Barkley would look toward real Republicans, he will see the difference between the phonies and the real deal. Ron Paul is the real deal and I am sure anyone who is conservative would like him.

JonKing | 9/3/2008, 2:05 pm EST

What “authority” does Barkley have to talk politics? Ummm…American citizenship is all you need. Amazing how most Bush supporters have no clue about America.

adude | 10/30/2008, 2:36 pm EST

Charlse has his right to change parties but to take a swipe out of 50% of this country and not expect anyone to be upset about it is really sociopathic. Does he not see how his insulting people does not hurt them? I know when I do I know I hurt others which is why I do it but Barkley seems to lack the ability to understand that which makes it easier for him to insult people generally. Just look at his history. Wherever he has been there has always been personel problems.

Anonymous | 11/10/2008, 12:34 am EST

you say if you are conservative you don’t attack other countries unless they attacked us.. seems like someone attacked us in 01 if my memory serves me correct..

Anony | 12/1/2008, 1:59 am EST

Iraq attacked us on 9-11? Or does “someone” having attacked us justify any war?

One or the other is all I can draw from your comment.

Anonymous | 12/29/2008, 10:27 am EST

Anony, have you been drinking the kool-aid? Iraq had nothing to do with the 9-11 attack. Nothing at all. That idea has been completely discredited.

Anonymous | 4/18/2009, 9:59 am EST

Oh, Charles Barkley doesn’t speak good English? That certainly didn’t stop people from voting for Bush. Republicans, quite simply, are no longer running the show!

I’ve had a quick look at your site, it looks very interesting. Maybe you’d like to send a synopsis through for us to publish for you? Please make it as factual as possible and include a short bio of yourself and a link to your site at the end.
