Open Thread: Gay Marriage and the Politics of Fear

6/19/06, 5:53 pm EST

My latest Rolling Stone piece — examining the naked politics behind the president’s renewed push to ban gay marriage — is now online. Please take a look and add your voice to the debate below.

Well if you check your American political history you will know that there have been many party realignments. What we now know as democrat’s and republicans were completely unrecognizable at that time. The “liberals” used to be the Republicans and the “conservatives” used to be the Democrats. The party names are not the same now as they were at that time. If you look at former Presidents you will notice that many of them were Whigs. That doesn’t make sense in present day political vernacular. So you yes these people may have been Democrats. Put they were not Democrats in the present sense of the word.

I thought the article was fascinating in terms of the comparitive history of fear and hate mongering that is practiced by the party that seeks to uphold “moral values”. Where is the morality and Christian values in encouraging hate for God’s creatures.

I wish I had the time this morning to take on all the pros and cons of this discussion as already expressed “so eloqunetly” … but I don’t. I will cut to the chase from my POV:

Now that we have a few centuries of science under our belt and understand the biology (biochemistry) of our bodies somewhat better than our fore-”fathers” did … and KNOW that human sexuality is a spectrum of cultural “initiatives” layered on a double-bell curve spectrum of biochemical manifestations … kind of like duct tape on an odd shaped balloon … (”odd” to too many of us … and we keep pointing to the even more odd shaped bulges popping out between the seams of the duct tape as evidence of perversity AND WHICH–BY THE WAY–NEITHER HOMOSEXUALITY OR BISEXUALITY ARE PERVERSE OCCURANCES IN THE SPECTRUM OF HUMAN (ANIMAL) SEXUALITY!!!) …

Anyway (knowing from experience) fundamentalist Christians are taught that the joy of sex is of Satan when in fact–we all now know–sex is, well, sex … a biological function of living creatures.

I mean–I’m 67–and men were still arguing in the 50’s whether women could have an orgasm.

C’mon, folks, let’s enjoy ourselves. (Just don’t hurt anybody intentionally in the frenzy.) The Creator made us this way … however you define “the Creator”.

I just don’t know how two guys have any more right to get married than some polygamists.

I mean, at least the polygamists get the “man and woman” part right, even if there is more than one woman…

Anonymous | 6/21/2006, 3:20 pm EST

Equal rights for everyone in this country means EQUAL RIGHTS for EVERYONE. If we allow two adults (man and woman) the legal protections of marriage, we must allow ANY TWO CONSENTING ADULTS the SAME legal protections, which at this time are only afforded by the federal government under the label of “marriage.” I assure you that if you visited my house, you would find two adult partners who cherish one another and are rearing a beautiful, intelligent, well-adjusted child, regardless of the fact that we are two women. I assure you that my “marriage” is full of more unconditional love, support, and all the family values we’re all trying to “defend” than the majority of male/female marriages in this country. PLEASE, I ask from the bottom of my heart that you not hurt my family any further by preventing us from having the same legal protections you have (the right to visit one another in the hospital, the right for my partner to make medical decisions for me and my child, etc.). You can call it what you will — marriage, civil union, domestic partnership — but please don’t take away the possibility that the government we pay taxes to could one day afford us the same legal protections it does to every other couple whose partners make a monogamous oath to one another. And if you won’t consider it for me, please consider it for our child. She deserves to have parents who can both legally make critical decisions for her well-being, who can both provide for her in the event of our deaths, and who are at the very least given the same dignity and respect as the parents of her classmates.

I love these fluff pieces on the marriage debate. Should I expect better from ‘Rolling Stone’?

First of all, the poll numbers don’t necessarily show a trend. The Pew Research Poll, which I believe the author is citing, shows SSM support at 39%, a 3 year high. But it was at 39% in 2003 and 35% in 2001. Also, only 10% strongly support it while almost three times that many strongly oppose it. 20 states have marriage amendments and 43 have statutes defining marriage as a man and a woman.

I love it when SSM proponents make the issue from their perspective sound as if it is the issue that makes-or-breaks the Constitution yet characterizes the opposition as simply bigots who have nothing better to do. For those who want to preserve the institution of marriage, it is just playing politics. And damn the president for trying to appeal to his base! How dare he support the people who helped get him elected, rather than play to satisfy those who did not (and the author presents this by characterizing Bush’s ‘base’ as some fringe and unimportant segment of the country that really don’t count).

Sorry, the Republicans didn’t start this fight. It’s not as if conservatives said out of the blue “Hey, if we proclaim marriage to be about husbands and wives, moms and dads, then maybe we can get homosexual advocates to push for same sex marriage, then we can turn around and use it politically!”

Don’t want this to be a political issue (and you clearly don’t) then don’t use judges re-write marriage laws for the country. It’s plain and simple.

Mark Hourigan | 8/3/2006, 3:05 pm EST

I totally agree with this article. This is discrimination no matter how you look at it. And just like the issue of interracial marriage in the 1960’s, I believe the issue of same sex marriage won’t be an issue 50 years from now. Do you hear any televangelists preaching today that interracial marriage is wrong? Wake up America!!!

@ Capitalist Pig:

Sorry man, but your vote numbers are WAY WAY off

—-

By party and region
The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7-87 (7%-93%)
Southern Republicans: 0-10 (0%-100%)
Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%)
Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%)

The Senate version:
•Southern Democrats: 1-20 (5%-95%) (only Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas voted in favor)
•Southern Republicans: 0-1 (0%-100%) (this was Senator John Tower of Texas)
•Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%-2%) (only Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia opposed the measure)
•Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%-16%) (Senators Bourke Hickenlooper of Iowa, Barry Goldwater of Arizona, Edwin L. Mechem of New Mexico, Milward L. Simpson of Wyoming, and Norris H. Cotton of New Hampshire opposed the measure)

Oopsie! CapPig got it all bizackwards!!

Who woulda thunk someone who usese the term “liberal hysteria” would completely misconstrue the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

If it doesnt personally hurt or effect your life in a negative way, why does anyone care that gay people have the same equal rights as other americans. All american deserve equal rights under the law of the land. Equal means Equal, not bigoted rights only. I hope we get a more equal rights friendly president. America needs it badly!!

God bless ALL.
A real christian man.

a real christian | 8/28/2008, 7:07 pm EST

Equal rights for all means just that. Bigots have no place in this country or the world. This have improved on equal rights, but there is still a ways to go. I will vote Obama for sure as he is for Equal rights for all.

America Needs A New Recipe

The Business As Usual restaurant has a chef named Eddy. Eddy, like most of the patrons, belongs to the ‘Ole-Blue’ club. Eddy’s been a Chef for 30 years. He’s got a philosophy about cooking that he holds dear to his heart. Problem is – truth be told, most of his meals are at best, mediocre –it’s the salt. His patrons have been eating at his restaurant for years because it’s the most convenient and familiar place in town. The convenience and familiarity factor has always overwhelmed the fact that everyone knows that Eddy puts too much salt in every dish. “I’ve been doing this for 30 years, Eddy proclaims with pride. I’m the most experienced Chef in the town.”

A new restaurant just opened across the street. ..Joe-Bob, a long time patron of the Business As Usual restaurant has developed heart problems. His doctor has repeatedly told him that if he didn’t start eating meals with less salt, that he would die. Joe-Bob heard about the restaurant across the street. He also heard that their chef is a recent graduate from the University of Healthy Foods. “Hmmmm…” , Joe-Bob, ponders, “…if the chef at that restaurant across the street is a recent grad, doesn’t that make him a member of the ‘Green’ club?”.

One day, one of his fellow patrons, Billy-Bob, comes over to him and shows him a flyer from the new place. The patron has a smirk on his face….”Ain’t this a kick in the head, Joe-Bob?, can ya believe the gall of them folks across the street?”. While Joe-Bob examines the flyer, with its low-salt fare, Billy-Bob leans over to him and says, “You ain’t seriously considering eating over there, are you, Joe-Bob? I mean, how many meals has their chef fixed?…..besides, aren’t they part of the ‘Green’ club?….then he chuckles – if you do, don’t drink their Koolade!”

Eddy took sick one day, and was replaced by Freddy. Freddy, like Eddy, belonged to the ‘Ole-Blue’ club. “I’ve been doing this for 29 years, Freddy proclaims with pride. I’m the second-most experienced Chef in the town”. Joe-Bob orders an item that Freddy says is one of his specialties. The first thing he notices is that it contains too much salt. As he winces, he looks out the window and notices that there are a lot of young folks entering that new restaurant across the street…

I’d like to offer you the following notions – A) There’s an 8-letter word for doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results; B) Sometimes you have to get a Chef with a better recipe if you want a better meal
