As Women Who Rock continues, U.K. singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding takes some time to chat with Rolling Stone about finding her own unique voice, her isolated upbringing and the influences of Björk, the Spice Girls, Lauryn Hill and more.

"I used to try and emulate Björk all the time," reveals Goulding. "I was into pop bands and pop singers and me and my mother used to listen to the radio, [BBC] Radio 1, all the time because we'd have to drive like half an hour to an hour to get anywhere. We lived in the middle of nowhere." But despite her ability to sing in other styles, it wasn't until later that Goulding developed her own. "It was only, I guess when I got to college that I for some reason started developing my own voice," she explains. "Then I just kind of had my own voice, and I guess it's just like a mixture of everything I've ever listened to. It just happens."

Ellie Goulding's debut album, Lights, was released in the U.S. last year.
