Bruce Springsteen offered a glimpse of his creative process, sort of, during a performance on behalf of President Obama yesterday in Virginia, according to Richmond NBC affiliate WWBT, which shot this video. The singer did an impression of the president requesting a campaign theme song (along with guitar and piano lessons for his kids), and joked that writing a song based on the slogan "Forward" is "not that much to go on." He paused, then continued, "Better than backward!"
Springsteen played the song he came up with, prompting the crowd in a call-and-response and offering sheepish explanations for the lyrics between verses. "When I got to the second verse, I was having a hard time finding words that rhyme with Obama," Springsteen said. "You run out of those real quick."
