Ron Wood is the latest rock icon to take a cold shower for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. As Ultimate Classic Rock reports, the Rolling Stones guitarist offered himself up to the good cause with humor and theatrical gestures on Sunday night. After enduring the chilliness, he paid it forward by challenging his son Tyrone, former Faces bandmate Rod Stewart and actor Woody Harrelson (between hilarious gasps for air).
The Ice Bucket Challenge, created to raise funds and awareness for the neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), has brought in $42 million for the cause, according to NBC. And a whole horde of rock musicians have joined in on the fun – including Alice Cooper, Kiss, Rush frontman Geddy Lee, Jon Bon Jovi and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready. Other participants from across the music spectrum include Justin Bieber, Arcade Fire, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift.
One of the most memorable Ice Bucket videos came from hard-rock mainstays the Foo Fighters, who sent up the iconic prom disaster scene from the 1976 horror classic Carrie, incorporating actual shots from the movie with frontman Dave Grohl dressed in full prom queen regalia.
More recently, the tag-team of Rihanna and Eminem took part onstage in Detroit during the final show of their joint Monster Tour. After Eminem walked off the stage, hype man Denaun Porter reminded the rapper that he'd previously agreed to an ice bath. "I knew this shit was coming, but — tonight?" Eminem asked, before sitting in a chair while Rihanna did the bucket dump. Eminem then nominated his tourmate, who took the plunge then and there.
