Paul Kalkbrenner Returns to the Rave Scene With 'Der Buhold' - Premiere
Techno star channels East Berlin dance culture

Techno favorite Paul Kalkbrenner takes us back to the heyday of rave music with the video for "Der Buhold," the latest single from his recent album Guten Tag. Meshing footage from Kalkbrenner's latest European arena tour with archival film of East Berlin raves in the early 1990s, the Robin Polak-directed clip is long on happy face t-shirts, EMF-inspired hair and quirky dance moves.

The 25 DJs That Rule the Earth

Kalkbrenner says the song reminded him and others of the early rave days, which prompted him to incorporate the vintage footage into the clip. He tells Rolling Stone that going to underground raves during that era was an anti-political statement.

"For East German youth, there had been no part of life that was not touched by politics," Kalbrenner says. "Always the flags, the anthems, the uniforms. This was peace, love and pancakes. For the first time, we had a chance of doing something hedonistic, what we wanted as individuals."
