As the grizzled hard rockers in Motörhead gear up for their inaugural rock cruise, which they've given the tongue-in-cheek name "Motörboat," they have come up with a suitable way to remind fans that they put out their still grizzled and still hard-sounding 21st album, Aftershock, last year: a lyric video.
Their graphic take on the song "Crying Shame" is anything but. The track itself is a full-on rocker with typically perseverant – and typically "Motörhead" – lyrics like "Stick it to 'em/Stick it through 'em," and a chugging classic rock & roll feel that benefits from frontman Lemmy Kilmister's sandpapery growl. They've saturated the video with sepia-tone imagery of factories chugging, gnarly drumsticks and, of course, gambling metaphors (the group's perennial "ace" in the hole). But what it all amounts to is, despite some shaky times on the road over the past year, Motörhead remain one of the most determined bands ever.
Although the group had to cancel some shows last year due to some health scares for Kilmister, he told Rolling Stone recently that he was feeling better now. "There is nothing weirder than having everything you are taken from you in one day – bingo," he said. "Let's face it – it isn't as much fun. But it can't be as much fun if I die. I don't believe that's much fun, either."
With Kilmister on the mend, the group has scheduled a number of tour dates on the West Coast of the U.S. and in Europe for this year. And of course there is their Motörboat festival, on which they'll be joined by Megadeth, Anthrax and Zakk Wylde, among others. "This will be everything you've come to expect from a night out with us, except even louder, with more great bands and no way of escaping," Kilmister said in a statement. "If you thought waves could rock a boat, you've got another thing coming with this lovely little outing."
