Mayer Hawthorne Goes 'Behind the Door' with Pharrell

Short documentary previews soulful singer's forthcoming new LP

Mayer Hawthorne's new album Where Does This Door Go is out next month, and in this clip from his new short documentary Behind the Door, the soulful singer gives a peek into his new music and working with Pharrell. The pair trade ideas in the booth, grooving on a "Hey, Ho" chant and working out the instrumentals. Hawthorne discusses effective storytelling with Pharrell and toys with a Roland keyboard to work out his hooks.

"There's no other guy like him that has his voice and has that story," Pharrell says. "[It's] a really great story. Wait until you guys hear it . . . His fucking album's a book. It's good."

Where Does This Door Go is due July 16th, and features production from Pharrell, Greg Wells, Jack Splash and Oak. Mayer Hawthorne will kick off a North American tour on July 12th at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. Pre-order the album here, and see Hawthorne's website for tour dates.
