Matt Nathanson's catchy homage to a wild, tattoo-covered stripper with a Ray Davies fixation is fleshed out with the help of this video, helmed by actor/comedian turned director Bobcat Goldthwait. Lifted from his eighth and latest studio album, Last of the Great Pretenders, Nathanson's clip for "Kinks Shirt" takes some unexpected, humorous turns in the pursuit of love when he finds out she is a he.
"This is far and away my favorite video I've ever made," Nathanson tells Rolling Stone. "The concept, the process . . . it just ruled. I was flattered Bob said yes because ever since he starred in Short Circuit with that robot, I made it a bucket list priority to work with him. I just thought 'this guy gets me!' It's nice to know that dreams really do come true."
Although he’s moved behind the camera, Goldthwait is still quite the joker, as evidenced by the video's treatment. "Honestly, I pitched this idea just to see the look on everyone's face," the filmmaker says. "I still can't believe we made it. When I heard Matt had a 10,000 Maniacs tattoo I thought I would hate him, but turns out he's an okay guy."
