Thee Oh Sees had a tough time getting started at last night's Carson Daly-sponsored SXSW showcase. A full house at Austin club Red 7 waited for 30 minutes after the scheduled 9 p.m. start time, then filtered out once word went around that the band wasn't in the building yet and that the following band (Tennis) would set up and play. When Thee Oh Sees showed up, ready for what they thought was a 10 p.m. set, an enthusiastic Daly grabbed the mic to introduce them to a thinner but still energetic crowd.
Last year, bandleader John Dwyer added a second drummer to his lineup, and last night, invited a third to join them: Carson Daly himself. For the last song, Lars Finberg stepped out from behind his drum kit and Daly sat down for a thoroughly competent performance. The showcase was being filmed from all angles, and assuredly some of this will air on Last Call. No word on whether Daly joined Cults, the night's headliners.
