Avett Brothers Mix New and Old for 'Live on Letterman'

North Carolina band plays an hour-long set after TV appearance

The Avett Brothers created a homey living-room vibe with the big Oriental rugs they brought with them to perform last night on the Late Show With David Letterman. After playing "Part From Me" on the broadcast, the group brought that same feeling to an hour-long set they played for the latest installment of the "Live on Letterman" performance series.

Where Does the Avett Brothers' 'Carpenter' Rank on Our 50 Best Albums of 2012 List?

Scott and Seth Avett locked their voices in wistful harmony over backing from acoustic guitar, banjo, cello, violin, upright bass on drums on songs from their latest album, Magpie and the Dandelion, and older tunes including "Laundry Room" and "I and Love and You," both of which appear on their 2009 album I and Love and You.

Seth Avett recently told Rolling Stone that the new album "feels like a bunch of fireworks," saying, "there is some sort of sparkly-eyed wonderment to Magpie."
