Hometown: Golden, Texas

Backstory: Musgraves started performing in public when she was just eight years old, and was writing her own songs by age nine. She hasn't slowed down since, appearing on the singing competition Nashville Star, touring with Willie Nelson and Lady Antebellum and working with such country stars as Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert. At just 24, Musgraves topped the country charts with her recent Mercury Nashville debut, Same Trailer Different Park.

Learn From the Masters: Musgraves cites a wide array of influences that includes everyone from John Prine to the Beach Boys and Weezer. As a teenager, Musgraves started taking guitar lessons with John DeFoore, a six-string maestro who also taught Lambert and folk singer Michelle Shocked.

Hot Clip: Musgrave goes her own way and encourages everyone to do the same on her latest single, "Follow Your Arrow." The clip comprises simple studio, stage and behind-the-scenes footage, while the track's innocent melody proves deceptive with each phrase Musgrave turns on its head.
