It will be another three months before the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side hits theaters this fall, but a new trailer for the film offers an early look at Outkast's André Benjamin (a.k.a. André 3000) in the title role.
'Jimi: All Is By My Side': John Ridley Talks About His Hendrix Biopic
The trailer shows Benjamin as Hendrix navigating the career moves that brought him from New York City, where he'd been playing backup guitar, to making the scene in Swinging London. The film, written and directed by 12 Years a Slave's John Ridley, limits its focus to the period from 1966-67, leading up to Hendrix's performance at the Monterey Pop Festival.
You can see Benjamin shredding onstage as Hendrix in the trailer, though the film will not be using any of Hendrix's songs. As Rolling Stone reported during the film's shooting, the soundtrack will instead include Benjamin's own versions of covers that Hendrix performed during the years depicted, before he released his debut album, Are You Experienced?
In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Ridley talked about his star's preparation for the role.
"André came out to L.A. in January of 2012 and worked with me through April on all aspects of Jimi, from watching video of him to working with a vocal coach to getting as slim and slender as Jimi was at that time period," Ridley said. "He didn't just work on playing the guitar, but playing the guitar left-handed. . . . He gave that performance because he wanted it. It was never going to be a Vegas lounge act. It was always going to be about getting to an emotional honesty with this character, and I cannot say enough about what André did."
