“So What”

Pink | 2008
Pink had already released four albums and become a household name in pop music before 'So What,' the high-octane lead single from 2008's 'Funhouse,' produced the Philly native with her first Number One single on the Billboard Hot 100. The Grammy-nominated track, with lyrics "So, so what, I'm still a rock star /I got my rock moves, and I don't need you," served as a post-break-up anthem following the split from hubby -- and motocross racer -- Carey Hart. "There's loneliness, there's fear, there's hurt, there's sarcasm, there's empowerment," Pink told Rolling Stone about the album in 2009. A good sport, Hart agreed to be in the music video for the track and the couple rekindled their romance several months later.

“Nightshift”

The Commodores | 1984

The year after soul legends Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson died, songwriter Dennis Lambert asked members of the Commodores to give him a tape of ideas. "And the one from Walter Orange has this wonderful bass line," said co-writer Franne Golde. "Plus the lyric, 'Marvin, he was a friend of mine' ... Within 10 minutes, we had decided it should be something like a modern R&B version of 'Rock 'n' Roll Heaven,' and I just said, 'Nightshift.'" This tribute to the recently deceased musicians was the band's only hit without Lionel Richie, who had left for a solo career.
