“Over”

Drake | 2010

“Over” was the lead single from Drake’s debut album, the platinum-certified Thank Me Later. The song, built upon a swelling sample of swirling guitars and strings, found the Canadian teen actor turned hip-hop star rapping about how dramatically success has changed his life, along with the pressures and temptations of fame, including women and partying (a frequent topic for the rapper). “You’re wondering if I’m a raging alcoholic?” he asked Rolling Stone, referring to the lyrics of “Over.” “I think it’s about the blur of life and work. I live for the nights when we just have fun, and wake up in the morning and say, ‘What just happened?’”

“Vicious”

Lou Reed | 1972

Opening Lou Reed's 1972 solo album, the hard-riffing "Vicious" actually traces its origin back to Reed's days with the Velvet Underground. Picking up bits and pieces of songs from the people and places around him, and filing his notes for later use, Reed said it was Andy Warhol who provided fuel for the song. "He said, 'Why don't you write a song called 'Vicious,'" Reed told Rolling Stone in 1989. "And I said, 'What kind of vicious?' 'Oh, you know, vicious like I hit you with a flower.' And I wrote it down literally."
