“Fix You”

Coldplay | 2005

The ballad manifested from lead singer Chris Martin tinkering with a gift Gwyneth Paltrow's dad had given to her before he passed away. "It's supposed to be a church organ but it isn't," Martin said. "In fact it's a keyboard that my father-in-law gave to Gwyneth, my wife, and it sat in the house for ages and then I turned it on one day and it had these amazing sounds on it." The band's bassist Guy Berryman admitted "Fix You" was loosely based on another organ-centric song -- Jimmy Cliff's gospel-tinged "Many Rivers to Cross."

“You Oughta Know”

Alanis Morissette | 1995

This blunt, bitter breakup song -- famous for its line "Would she go down on you in a theater?" -- was long rumored to be about Alanis Morissette getting dumped by Full House actor Dave Coulier. But while she never confirmed it was about him (Coulier himself says it is, however), she insisted the song wasn't all about scorn. "By no means is this record just a sexual, angry record," she told Rolling Stone. "The song wasn't written for the sake of revenge. It was written for the sake of release. I'm actually a pretty rational, calm person."
