Asheville, North Carolina isn't exactly a cultural hub for rap music; it's a hippie college town, full of bohemian street buskers and hipster hookah bars. But nobody seems to have informed Big Boi, whose commanding, career-spanning performance at the Orange Peel – the second date on his Shoes for Running Tour – briefly transformed the city into a buzzing hip-hop haven. After emerging to a fanfare of triumphant horn samples, the rapper – decked out in a red basebal...  | More »

  • Jim James Spreads the Love in Louisville Tour Kickoff

    April 18, 2013 9:50 AM ET
     |  Ryan Reed

As ominous blue lights darted through the expanses of Louisville's ornate Brown Theatre, Jim James and his four-piece band strode onstage to a murky synth drone. James, dressed in a dapper chocolate-brown suit, carried the awkward glow of a man picking up his prom date 15 years too late. He smiled giddily, bowing in a silent "Namaste" pose as he surveyed the sold-out crowd, his bandmates nestling into the psychedelic grooves of "State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)," the opening track from his...  | More »

     |  Steve Appleford

They brought no plan or set lists, but modern troubadours Sam Beam (a.k.a. Iron and Wine) and Glen Hansard (the Frames, Swell Season) filled a tiny club in Los Angeles last night with songs aching, gentle and raging for a private show hosted by public radio stalwart KCRW. The intimate two-hour set at the Sayers Club came together as a result of Beam being in town to promote Iron and Wine’s upcoming album, Ghost On Ghost, while Hansard was passing through on his way back to Dublin.      |  Jon Blistein

The first sound the audience heard off Phoenix's Bankrupt! was a deep, disquieting synth pulse that grew flecked with fairy dust, only to fade out just as it revved up. Last night at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg – for a special show that will be broadcast on Sirius XM's Alt Nation station (channel 36) Monday, April 8th at 8 p.m. – the French dance rockers offered the intro to "Love Like A Sunset" before serving up the full version of that first song –...  | More »

     |  Steve Knopper

Irving Azoff, manager of Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen, has debunked a rumor singer David Lee Roth has spread in recent interviews that rockers Van Halen will perform "probably 50, 60 shows" in Europe beginning at the end of this year. "Nothing's been discussed yet," Azoff tells Rolling Stone. "Why would he say this? Hey, Dave's a talkative guy. Why don't you call and ask him?" The band had to abruptly cancel a tour of Japan last August when guitarist Van Halen developed ...  | More »

"How many vintage Green Day fans are out there tonight?" asked singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong last night at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California, midway through the opening show of the band's U.S tour – the band's return from Armstrong's recent rehab. As if to get a closer look, he asked, "Who wants to join us onstage? Come on, let's go!"
