The 50 Best Albums of 2012

Now it's your turn. What was your favorite album of the year? There's a lot to choose from. Everybody from Leonard Cohen (age 78) to Taylor Swift (age 22) had a really good year. Neil Young got back with Crazy Horse and Jack White stepped away from his many bands. Fiona Apple returned from hiatus and Green Day dropped three separate albums. Long-dormant 1990s bands like Garbage, Soundgarden and No Doubt also came back onto the scene. So vote for whichever album you want, but only vote for one and please only vote a single time.

“Madame George”

Van Morrison | 1968

One of the first stream-of-consciousness epics to make it onto a Van Morrison record, his drawn-out farewell to the eccentric "Madame George" lasted nearly 10 minutes, combining ingredients from folk, jazz and classical music. The character that gave the song its title provoked speculation that it was about a drag queen, though Morrison denied this in Rolling Stone. "If you see it as a male or a female or whatever, it's your trip," he remarked. "I see it as a ... a Swiss cheese sandwich. Something like that."
