Tennessee native Chris Young kicked off his I'm Coming Over Tour last night with a homecoming show in Nashville — as well as a special guitar-slinging guest in Brad Paisley.
With Young teasing fans via social media that there would be a surprise, the moment came halfway through his first headlining gig in Nashville since 2012, as he called his Sony Music label mate Paisley to the stage. The two performed a laid-back version of the Eric Clapton hit "Change the World," with Young on soulful lead vocals and Paisley backing the singer with his patented tasty guitar licks. Paisley remained silent throughout the performance but as the song ended, he pointed to Young and told the audience, "This is the greatest guy in the world right here."
The 75-minute show included several of Young's biggest hits, including "Tomorrow," "Voices," "The Man I Want to Be" and the latest Top Ten hit, "I'm Comin' Over," which will serve as the title track of Young's fifth studio LP, set for a November 13th release. Prior to taking the stage, Young was presented with a plaque commemorating the gold-record (half-million-selling) status of that single.
"I was both excited and anxious to come home and play a show in Nashville," Young said in a statement. "I knew I was going to have a lot of friends and family in the audience so I didn't want to screw up."
Young's upcoming LP was co-produced by the artist with Cory Crowder, who co-wrote the sexy "I'm Comin' Over" with Young and Josh Hoge. The singer says the project will have more of his personal stamp on it.
"There's a lot more work on the front end [as well as] in the studio after," Young tells Rolling Stone Country of the production process. "I like to think I got to do some of the more tedious stuff this time. It wasn't just listening to a mix and saying, 'Man, I remember this one part.' It was everything from pre-production to piecing together every single part that's on the record. I listened to every single note that is played by every single instrument. . .entirely too many times."
Jerrod Niemann and Cam opened Young's show at Music City's newest outdoor venue. The I'm Comin' Over Tour, however, will feature Eric Paslay and Clare Dunn.
