Andrew Bird has unveiled an intimate, minimalist video for "Left Handed Kisses," his new duet with Fiona Apple. The clip, directed by Philip Andelman, finds the two musicians gazing at each other while sitting in kitchen chairs – their glances harnessing the confused angst of Bird's lyrics, which touch on his inability to write a straightforward love song.
"The point your song here misses is that if you really loved me / You'd risk more than a few 50 cent words in your backhanded love song," Apple sings as she picks pedals off a flower, rings a bell and breaks a bottle in anger. Bird strums an acoustic guitar and saws at a violin, his attempts at romantic charm proving futile.

"My inclination was to write a song about why I can't write a simple love song," Bird wrote of the track in a statement. "The song began as an internal dialogue. At first it was just my voice. Then another voice came creeping in and I thought 'this should be a duet if I can find the right person.' I needed to find someone really indicting. She was totally committed. The session was a long whiskey-fueled night - unhinged, for sure. All worth it, of course. I can't write simple love songs. People are complex."
"Left Handed Kisses" is featured on Bird's upcoming LP Are You Serious, out April 1st via Loma Vista. Last week, the multi-instrumentalist teased the album with the lush "Roma Fade," which Bird said explores the "fine line between romance and creepiness."
