Vanilla Ice has created a new website called Vanilla Ice Real Estate to provide real estate guidance to his fans. The rapper has extensive experience in real estate investment over the past 16 years and has starred in a reality-tv series on the DIY Network called The Vanilla Ice Project in which he renovated homes in Southern Florida. DMX to Complete Work on New Album
DMX has told VIBE magazine that he's planning to hit the studio immediately after finishing a six month jail sentence next month. The record, which has been in the works for some time, is said to include music by longtime collaborator Swizz Beatz and guest appearances by Sean Kingston, Drag-On, Tyrese and the LOX. [Billboard]

The Roots Announce New York Gigs
?uestlove and the Roots are set to perform a series of shows in New York City next week. ?uestlove will play two gigs as part of a supergroup including Booker T. Jones, Christian McBride, Eric Krazno and Gary Bartz at the Blue Note on June 20th and 21st. The next night at the Blue Note, the full Roots band will accompany Rakim as he performs his classic album Paid In Full in its entirety. The band will wrap up the run of gigs by performing a set of their own tunes at the Van Jones MoveOn event at the Town Hall on June 23rd. [Press release]

Freddie Gibbs Plans 24-Hour Album
Mixtape rapper Freddie Gibbs has announced plans to record an entire album tomorrow with DJ Statik Selektah in just 24 hours at the producer's studio in Brooklyn. The album will be available in the iTunes shop on Friday, June 24th. Statik Selektah has recorded previous one-day albums with rappers Saigon and Freeway. [Pitchfork]

It turns out that a single with "American" in its title--recorded on the Fourth of July during the nation's Bicentennial, no less--can actually sell better in Britain. Coupled with the Heartbreakers' flair for Byrds jangle and Animals hooks, though, is Tom Petty's native-Florida drawl that keeps this classic grounded at home. Petty dispelled rumors that the song was about a suicidal student, explaining that the inspiration came from when he was 25 and used to salute the highway traffic outside his apartment window. "It sounded like the ocean to me," he recalled. "That was my ocean. My Malibu. Where I heard the waves crash, but it was just the cars going by."
