Vanilla Ice Busted for Domestic Abuse

Night in jail for Vanilla Ice after fight with wife

January 5, 2001 12:00 AM ET

Vanilla Ice, who ruled the charts in 1990 with his fifteen-million-selling single "Ice Ice Baby," found himself on ice in a Florida jail Wednesday night. Police were summoned after the musician, born Robert Van Winkle, allegedly struck his wife, Laura, as the couple drove on Interstate 595 in the town of Davie, according to Broward County Police.

Ice denies striking his wife, telling police that he had placed his hand over her mouth "to shut her up," according to a police report. However, he did admit to ripping out some of her hair, but insisted he did so to prevent her from jumping out the truck's window. According to the Associated Press, his wife told quite a different story, claiming that she feared her husband. The incident was witnessed by the couple's two children.

The rapper was arrested at the scene, taken into custody and released on Thursday on $3,500 bail.

"We had a heated argument," the musician told Miami's WSVN TV after he was released from jail. "Before [the police] would say, 'OK, just leave ... Come back later, cool down. Go to a friend's house.' Now they have to make you spend a night in jail."

Charges against Vanilla Ice are still pending.

“Too Close”

Next | 1998

Next was formed in Minneapolis when the uncle of Terry "T-Low" and Raphael "Tweety" Brown, who was a gospel choir director, introduced the brothers to Robert Lavelle "R.L." Huggar. Sounds of Blackness singer Ann Nesby groomed the R&B group before handing them over to Naughty by Nature's KayGee, who wrote and produced "Too Close." The idea for the song was sparked "from a conversation we had with several girls at a nightclub," explained T-Low. "It's talking about the club scene, with guys getting out of hand and the female telling him to back up, asking, 'What are you doing?'"
