Twittering Woodstock

Relive the music and mud in live-action tweets @YasgursFarm

August 12, 2009 4:20 PM ET

The Woodstock Music and Art Festival is already rock music's most legendary moment: the era-defining music, the unrivaled glow of harmony and optimism, the use of mud as formalwear. But one thing that is rarely mentioned is that some of the very first Twitter messages came pouring right out of Max Yasgur's Farm. To celebrate Woodstock's 40th anniversary, Rolling Stone has excavated some of these primitive tweets — the Rosetta Stone of aimless concert fidgeting! These notes from an enthusiastic attendee — known only as by his handle "CannedPete" — provide an inside look at the festival from the myopic, narcissistic viewpoint we desperately crave from people who enjoy concerts with their face buried in a phone. Instead of indulging in mind-blowing free sex or the phenomenal drugs, this young pioneer had his Woodstock mediated by technology — and we are all the better for it!

“Bird on a Wire”

Leonard Cohen | 1969

While living on the Greek island of Hydra, Cohen was battling a lingering depression when his girlfriend handed him a guitar and suggested he play something. After spotting a bird on a telephone wire, Cohen wrote this prayer-like song of guilt. First recorded by Judy Collins, it would be performed numerous times by artists incuding Johnny Cash, Joe Cocker and Rita Coolidge. "I'm always knocked out when I hear my songs covered or used in some situation," Cohen told Rolling Stone. "I've never gotten over the fact that people out there like my music."
