Frontman Steve Winwood announced the outing during the band's Bonnaroo appearance in June. Other than Winwood, Capaldi was the only other original member of Traffic on board. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Wood died in 1983 and guitarist Dave Mason has had a tempestuous relationship with Winwood over the years. Though Mason appeared with the group during its acceptance speech at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in March, he didn't join Winwood and Capaldi for a performance of "Dear Mr. Fantasy" at the event.
Mason said that he, Winwood and Capaldi played a few songs together at a New York City club gig three years ago, their first reunion in three decades. When asked about a Traffic reunion, he told Rolling Stone, "It would be nice to do something again with the right spirit." But Mason was not scheduled to play with the band this fall.
