The Beatles are collaborating with Cirque de Soleil to create a production that will replace Siegfried and Roy's legendary act at the Mirage hotel and casino.
The surviving members of the Fab Four, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr -- along with John Lennon and George Harrison's widows, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison -- will take part in shaping the show, the first such project for the group. The Canadian Cirque de Soleil troupe -- renowned for their creative acrobatics, art production and unconventional set designs, such as their underwater show O for the Bellagio Hotel -- will have complete access to the Beatles' heavily guarded catalog.
The Mirage has been without a key attraction since Roy Horn, of the German illusionist duo Siegfried and Roy, was mauled by one of his tigers during a performance last October. The Mirage is completely revamping the venue, creating a new theater-in-the-round to seat 2,000 people.
The as-yet-untitled, ninety-minute Beatles extravaganza is set to premiere in the summer of 2006, at a cost of $100 million. A huge response is anticipated: Cirque de Soleil performances alone attracted more than seven million people worldwide this year.
