Click to listen to West End Motel's 'Burn It Down'
Mastodon is one of metal's most ambitious and brutal bands, but guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds sometimes needs a change of pace. With his side project West End Motel, Hinds keeps things fiery but playful; the new track "Burn It Down" injects brightly shout-out-loud vocals, warm and soulful textures, swooning funk melodies and a breezy beat that's downright feel-good music.
"I walked into [singer] Tom Cheshire's house one day and him and [pianist-guitarist] Mike Shina were playing the chords and I just started singing the lyrics right there out of the blue," Hinds tells Rolling Stone. "We were being kinda silly and had the cheesy Casio island beat on, playing around with the two chords. We decided that it would be funny to just leave it in when we recorded it... so ridiculous!"
"Burn It Down" is on West End Motel's upcoming album, Only Time Can Tell, out October 30th.
