Kelly Clarkson gave a tearful performance of powerful ballad "Piece By Piece" on 'American Idol'

Kelly Clarkson brought the room and herself to tears during her emotional return to American Idol. The singer was the reality competition's first winner in 2002.

The show is currently in the middle of its fifteenth and final season, and Clarkson joined to perform her ballad "Piece by Piece" off her 2015 album of the same name. The powerful song compares her experience of being abandoned by her father at a young age with the relationship she has with her husband and own daughter. Her performance not only brought judges Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez to tears, but Clarkson also began crying in the middle of singing the song. She apologized later, blaming her hormones from being "super pregnant."

Late last year, Clarkson cancelled all remaining dates of her tour in support of the album. She was ordered to go on vocal rest, per doctors' orders, and revealed prior to the cancellation that she had been dealing with vocal problems following the 2014 birth of her daughter.
