Kacey Musgraves' 2015 album Pageant Material showed the witty singer-songwriter stretching out stylistically from the strummy, pop-tinged country of her debut to more lavish sonic surroundings. That much was immediately clear with "Late to the Party," an easygoing number that painted a sweet picture of romantic contentment and could have been a smash in a different time (like the Nineties).
Last night, Musgraves and band gave an elegant performance of "Late to the Party" during their visit to Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Trading in the whimsical pink theme of her Country & Western Rhinestone Revue shows, Musgraves dons a chic black dress while her band sports white suits worthy of a Las Vegas lounge. Musical director Misa Arriaga harmonizes with Musgraves on the choruses and the whole thing casually ambles along in a way that matches the unhurried couple at its heart. By the song's end, gold balloons are cascading all around them.
Musgraves wrapped up 2015 with a series of shows in Europe and will resume her regular touring schedule with a January 21st show in Dallas. In March, she'll head back to Europe for the Country 2 Country Festival in Ireland, Scotland and England.
