BJ the Chicago Kid has teamed with Kendrick Lamar and comedian Hannibal Buress for the funny and sweet video for his latest single, "The New Cupid." The song comes from In My Mind, the gospel-influenced singer-songwriter's major-label debut, which came out in February.
In the Matt Barnes–directed clip, Buress plays Cupid, who has finally called it quits after years of spreading love. Buress' heavy-drinking version of Cupid is intent on destroying a relationship, paying off a woman to make a guy look like he was cheating on his girlfriend. Throughout the clip, BJ is seen performing from a garage and later joins Lamar on a stage during the rapper's guest verse.
"Working on this video was a dream come true, from Hannibal agreeing to play the new Cupid, to Raphael [Saadiq, of Tony! Toni! Toné!] providing the music, IAMSU lending us his acting skills and Mila J stopping through to lend us her smile and beauty," BJ tells Rolling Stone. "I have to say I have a great group of friends. Even Kendrick [Lamar] paused everything he had going around the Grammys to make sure we had what we needed."
Buress was particularly thrilled about his character and inclusion in the video. "The video shoot was a spiritual experience," Buress tells RS. "We're gonna change lives with this one."
The actor is especially complimentary of his own contributions to the project. "BJ was telling how the video was missing one piece," says Buress. "It was me. I came into the picture and made this project whole. The cherry on top. The final stroke of the paintbrush on a masterpiece. A lot of people have been asking about my compensation for this project. BJ paid me in a lifetime subscription to Tidal and three ghostwritten 13-bar verses about any subject matter of my choosing. Stay blessed."
