Replacements, Sonic Youth, Fugazi to be Honored at 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' Concert

Music critic Michael Azerrad will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of his book Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 with a special concert at Manhattan's Bowery Ballroom on May 22nd. The bill will feature several contemporary artists selected by Azzarad who will perform the music of the 13 bands featured in the book. So, for example, Titus Andronicus will play the music of the Replacements, tUnE-yArDs will interpret the songs of Sonic Youth, St. Vincent will cover Big Black and Ted Leo will do a set of Minor Threat numbers.

The concert will also include members of Dirty Projectors performing music by Black Flag. The band had previously paid tribute to Black Flag on their album Rise Above, which was comprised of new compositions based on songwriter David Longstreth's fading memories of their record Damaged. It looks like this time around Longstreth and company will actually be playing the Black Flag tunes straight.

Other bands on the bill include Dan Deacon, Buke and Gass, Wye Oak and Delicate Steve, with others to be announced later on.

“Youth Knows No Pain”

Lykke Li | 2011

“Like on 'Youth Knows No Pain' — we are the ones that should demonstrate, because we can take it,” Likke Li said. “We can pierce ourselves, take Ecstasy, dance all night and still go to work at our McDonald's jobs.” Despite the hedonistic sentiment in the song, the Swedish singer also admitted in hindsight her youth had repercussions. “I remember when I was 18-19 and feeling that I know it all,” Li said. “I always feel that I know it all. But that song is about realizing you don’t, and reflecting, ‘Boy, if I only knew what would follow.’”
