Ravi Shankar, Temptations to Get Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards

Carole King, Lightnin' Hopkins among others to be honored

The Recording Academy has announced the 2013 recipients of its Special Merit Awards, honoring the late sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and Motown's Temptations with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Carole King, Patti Page, Lightnin' Hopkins, Glenn Gould and Charlie Haden will also be recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards, while Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Leonard and Phil Chess and Alan Livingston will receive the Trustees Award. Ikutaro Kakehashi and Dave Smith, and Royer Labs will receive Technical Grammy Awards.

Ravi Shankar Dead at 92

A special invite-only ceremony for these awards will be held February 9th, with the 55th Grammy Awards following on February 10th live on CBS.

As the British Invasion reached its peak in 1964, Brenda Lee went from Nashville to London to record one of her hardest-rocking hits, her perky vocal backed by a stuttering, squalling guitar. That guitar was played by session musician Jimmy Page, yet to skyrocket to fame with first the Yardbirds and then Led Zeppelin. "She said to me, 'I've come here to make a record with the British sound,'" remembered producer Mickie Most. "She felt she wouldn't get the same sound in Nashville because they're only just catching up on the British beat group sound of about six months ago."
