The Big News: New albums stormed the charts last week, and seven debuts moved into the Top 10. The fresh blood was led by Eminem's Relapse, which moved 609,000 copies to easily grab the title of 2009's top-selling debut. The LP is also Em's fifth consecutive Number One album. After topping the charts after only a half-week on sale, Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown sold an additional 165,000 copies to claim Number Two, almost doubling the 89,000 units sold by the week's Number Three album, Kenny Chesney's Greatest Hits II. Only 4,000 copies separated the albums that landed at four, fifth, sixth and seventh, but it was Method Man & Redman's Blackout 2 and Dane Cook's Isolated Incident that rounded out the Top Five.
Debuts: Other than the four rookies in the Top Five, the upper tier of the charts also included Busta Rhymes' Back On My B.S. at Six, Tori Amos' Abnormally Attracted to Sin at Nine and Kate Voegele's A Fine Mess scoring 10th with 37,000 copies sold. Further down the line, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood's Live At Madison Square Garden bowed at 14, the Iron & Wine rarities collection Around The Well placed 25th, former Idol champ Ruben Studdard's Love Is scored the 36 spot and Manners, the hotly tipped debut by Passion Pit, took Number 51.
Last Week's Heroes: While last week's hero was undoubtedly American Idol Season Eight champ Kris Allen, the charts tell a different story: In what could foreshadow the two finalists' post-Idol career, AI runner-up Adam Lambert slotted at 33 with his iTunes-only Season Eight Favorite Performances collection. Kris Allen's compilation of the same name entered the charts at 50. Both singers have handfuls of tracks on the singles charts, where Allen has the edge.
