The last chapter of singer-songwriter Andy Hull's Right Away, Great Captain! trilogy is a contemplative, poignant end to the six-year saga, exploring the mind of a man who is condemned to death. The Bitter End (2006) and 2008's The Eventually Home tell the story of a vengeful sailor who flees to the sea after finding out that his wife has cheated on him with his own brother. He then returns home and stands over his wife and brother while they are asleep, trying to decide who he will murder. He chooses to murder his brother, and thus begins the final album, entitled The Church of the Good Thief.

"When I Met Death," the album's second track,  is a soft yet powerful acoustic narrative in which every note helps set the scene. At this point in the story, the setting is one of phantasmal proportions. "[The song] is describing a vision he has when [the protagonist] meets God," says Hull. "He is taken into the future and shown what it will look like when he is gone and is given advice on how to settle his loose ends with his family before it's too late."
