Influential electric guitarist Mike Bloomfield receives a career-spanning box set, From His Head to His Heart to His Hands, on February 4th. In advance of the release, you can listen here to the premiere of "Glamour Girl," an expressive, eight-minute-long blues jam.
The track hails from Bloomfield's previously unheard performance at New York's legendary the Bottom Line in the late 1970s. The song was recorded with Al Kooper, who produced and curated the box set and first played with Bloomfield on Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited sessions in 1965 and Super Session in 1968.
Bloomfield, who was once heralded by Dylan as the "best guitar player I ever heard," gets the royal treatment in this three CD/one DVD retrospective. It runs from previously unreleased demos cut in 1964 for John Hammond, Sr. to the late guitarist's final public performance with Dylan in 1980, and includes plenty of his work with such artists as Muddy Waters and Janis Joplin. Sweet Blues: A Film About Mike Bloomfield, directed by Bob Sarles, rounds out the project.
