The 2008 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival starts in a few hours, and the anticipation for the three-day event is palpable. "I'm going for Kraftwerk," explains Kelly Osbourne, who is an annual attendant at the fest. I don't know why. I just want to see them so bad. Coachella is a great place to learn about new bands."
Former Clash guitarist Mick Jones will take his new garage band Carbon/Silicon to the Coachella stage on Saturday. "We've heard it's very hot in the desert," Jones deadpans. "I'm going to have one of those hats on that has a fan in the middle of it." When asked who he would want to collaborate with on stage, Jones says, "I would like to have played with Stravinsky. If you want someone alive, I love Amy Winehouse. That would be nice."
Danny Masterson, who will be serve as the DJ to a Coachella party over the weekend and is one of the many Hollywood types who frequent the festival, says "I've never seen Portishead, so I'm very excited for that show. The best thing about it is getting to see the bands from the side of the stage. That's a good 'actor guy' perk."
Meanwhile, Har Mar Superstar enjoys Coachella for entirely different reasons. "I like to do mushrooms and drink vodka cranberries all day. That enhances the experience." For more on Rolling Stone's coverage of Coachella 2008, check back here all weekend for updates, reviews, interviews and photos.
