Metallica to Receive "Guitar Hero" Treatment in 2009

June 3, 2008 2:01 PM ET

Metallica's thrashing riffs and spiraling guitar solos will soon be honored with their own incarnation of the Guitar Hero franchise, according Gamespot. The Metallica-only edition of the popular video game is said to be due out early in 2009 on various consoles. The San Francisco headbangers will join the ranks of Aerosmith as bands that have Guitar Hero editions dedicated to them. No word yet on which songs will be featured and whether or not other bands' songs will be included (as is the case on the Aerosmith version), but virtual shredders are already familiar with the band, as "One" appeared on Guitar Hero III and several tunes (including "Enter Sandman") are available on competitor title Rock Band.

“1999”

Prince | 1982

“I don’t consider myself a great poet,” Prince told Rolling Stone. “I just know I’m here to say what’s on my mind.” In the case of the apocalyptic party anthem “1999,” he was worried about then-president Ronald Reagan’s foreign policies. The song’s melody is based on a riff borrowed from the Mamas and Papas’ “Monday, Monday,” and Prince originally envisioned the first verse with three-part harmony but later split the vocals between himself and members of the Revolution. Because Warner Bros., with whom Prince was locked in a contractual battle, owned the original’s masters, Prince rerecorded the song and appropriately released that version in 1999.
