Madonna, Guy Ritchie Marry in Scotland

Wedding bells ring for Madonna, Ritchie

December 27, 2000 12:00 AM ET

Madonna and Guy Ritchie were married Friday, Dec. 22, at Scotland's Skibo Castle. The world's most famous and most photographed woman managed to get through the big day with virtually no details of the event made public. Confirmation came on Saturday when Rev. Susan Brown, who performed the ceremony, told the hundreds of reporters who had descended on the Scottish town of Dornoch that the wedding "did happen."

It is believed that Stella McCartney, Paul's daughter and the designer for the Paris fashion house Chloe, designed Madonna's dress and was in attendance at the wedding. Other celebrity friends spotted were Sting and Trudie Styler, Gwyneth Paltrow, Donatella Versace and Rupert Everett.

On Thursday, Madonna and Ritchie baptized their four-month-old son, Rocco Ritchie, at Dornoch Cathedral.

“Everyday People”

Sly and the Family Stone | 1968

"Everyday People" managed to trailblaze in two different ways -- it was one of the first pop hits to deal with the subject of racial harmony, and it utilized Larry Graham's "slap" technique on the bass guitar, which would soon be copied by countless other bassists. Graham once said about his pulsating style, "I'd never done that before … that's where the freedom of creativity came in for the band, that we'd be allowed to do that." In 1978, the song's line "Different strokes for different folks" would be borrowed for the title of the hit television show Diff'rent Strokes.
