Lavigne, Whibley to Marry

Pop singer Avril Lavigne, 20, is engaged to marry Sun 41 frontman Deryck Whibley, 25. Whibley proposed over the weekend while Lavigne was completing her European tour.

The pair -- both from Ontario, Canada, and both pop-punk artists -- have dated for more than a year, and were friends for several years before that.

Whibley previously dated socialite and reality TV star Paris Hilton before his relationship with Lavigne became romantic. The couple reportedly bought a home together in Los Angeles' Bel Air neighborhood last week.

This May, Lavigne told Us Weekly, "I hope to make a few more records, get married and have a couple of kids." When asked where she would settle down to raise a family, Lavigne replied, "Canada."

Sum 41 released their fourth album, Chuck, last fall, while Lavigne has been touring since the release of her sophomore effort, Under My Skin, last spring. Lavigne returns to North America next week.

Next was formed in Minneapolis when the uncle of Terry "T-Low" and Raphael "Tweety" Brown, who was a gospel choir director, introduced the brothers to Robert Lavelle "R.L." Huggar. Sounds of Blackness singer Ann Nesby groomed the R&B group before handing them over to Naughty by Nature's KayGee, who wrote and produced "Too Close." The idea for the song was sparked "from a conversation we had with several girls at a nightclub," explained T-Low. "It's talking about the club scene, with guys getting out of hand and the female telling him to back up, asking, 'What are you doing?'"
