Hours after Kanye West received some presidential advice from Barack Obama and performed at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in San Francisco, the rapper capped off his Saturday with a surprise audition for American Idol. Tryouts for the singing competition's upcoming final season rolled into the Bay Area this weekend, and West stunned judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and host Ryan Seacrest by showing up to deliver an a cappella rendition of his hit "Gold Digger."
Kim Kardashian first shared a photo of her husband trying out for the American Idol judges, and Seacrest later posted a celebratory photo of the rapper revealing his coveted Golden Ticket to the competition's Hollywood Week. (It's unclear whether West will actually vie for the crown of the final American Idol winner, like his pursuit of the United States presidency in 2020, or if this was just a one-off appearance on the program.)

In May, Fox announced that they would not renew American Idol following its upcoming 15th season, which premieres this January; the West audition will likely air in full at that time. The series that discovered Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry promised that it would reflect on its history with a "season-long celebratory event" in addition to unearthing one last Idol.
Although Idol winners have combined for a total of 13 Grammys, led by Underwood's seven, the series hasn't discovered an award winner in nearly a decade. A Kanye victory in Season 15, however, would end American Idol's run on a winning note.
