Jack White Talks Bond Theme Collaboration With Alicia Keys

August 21, 2008 4:29 PM ET

Jack White has finally given some insight into his James Bond theme collaboration with Alicia Keys. Discussing "Another Way to Die," the theme for the upcoming Quantum of Solace, White said "After a couple of years of wanting to collaborate with Alicia Keys, it took James Bond himself to finally make it happen. Alicia put some electric energy into her breath that cemented itself into the magnetic tape. Very inspiring to watch." White went on to say that the famed Memphis Horns, as well as some of "Nashville's finest," were also involved in the recording. "We wanted to push soul into those tapes, and join the family of Barry, Bassey, Connery and Craig," White said, referring to Bond actors and composers of the past.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Nirvana | 1991

"Smells Like Teen Spirit," named after a brand of deodorant marketed to girls, was Kurt Cobain's attempt to "write the ultimate pop song," he said, using the soft-loud dynamic of his favorite band, the Pixies. Cobain "had that dichotomy of punk rage and alienation," the song’s producer, Butch Vig, told Rolling Stone, "but also this vulnerable pop sensibility. In 'Teen Spirit,' a lot of that vulnerability is in the tone of his voice." Sadly, by the time of Nirvana's last U.S. tour, in late '93, Cobain was tortured by the obligation to play "Teen Spirit" every night. "There are many other songs that I have written that are as good, if not better," he claimed.
