In 2014, Amazon got into the holiday spirit by releasing a compilation of Christmas tunes by indie bands and making it available for free for users of Prime Music. The 2016 edition, Indie for the Holidays, includes Melvins' gnashing, guitar-slathered version of "Carol of the Bells." "The song has scared us since we were children," King Buzzo told Stereogum. "That's why we wanted to do it."
The band may have conquered their fears, but their "Carol of the Bells" seems likely to terrify future generations of children. The track is full of relentless guitars, bashing drums and swirling vocals that sound like cultish incantations.
In 2014, Beth Orton, Ladyhawke, and Ashley Monroe contributed to Amazon's holiday effort, while last year's collection featured originals by YACHT and Robert Pollard along with Langhorne Slim's cover of "Deck the Halls" and Wild Child's take on "Silent Night."
Indie for the Holidays is due out on Friday.
