DJ Jazzy Jeff has added another dimension of soul to "Summertime," his iconic 1991 hit with Will "Fresh Prince" Smith. The producer-turntablist teamed with DJ Eric Lau for a revamped 25th anniversary remix of the track, Okayplayer reports. The silky update finds Smith rapping about the nostalgic pleasures of summer over a groove outfitted with new synth-strings, snapping drums and airy backing vocals.
Last week, Jeff premiered Season Four of Vinyl Destination, a web series documenting his tour travels. The DJ has dates scheduled throughout the summer; his next is July 9th in Victoria, Canada.
In October, Jeff spoke to Rolling Stone about reuniting with Smith for a new Fresh Prince LP, saying "the timing is perfect."
"Let me put it like this: You don't retire from an art," he said. "This has always been inside of [Smith] and he's always wanted to do this. He has never stopped rapping. It's just that being the biggest movie star on the planet, you don't have enough time. There has never been a time that he didn't jump on my microphone when we're together, because that is in his blood. You think you're going to be around a basketball court with Michael Jordan and he is not going to shoot? That'll never happen! I’m just happy that he's at the point where he's like, 'You know what? I really want to do this.' And the whole idea is he realizes he wants to have fun. I can tell the level of enjoyment he has from doing it."
Two months later, on The Tonight Show, Smith confirmed plans for live shows, telling Jimmy Fallon, "[DJ Jazzy] Jeff and I are definitely gonna go on tour [in 2016]."
