Grab Summer's First Party Jam From Phenomenal Handclap Band

Looking for the early frontrunner for the "D.A.N.C.E." of 2009? Check out a new track from the Phenomenal Handclap Band, a genre-breaking Manhattan/Brooklyn collective that are guaranteed to soundtrack a lion's share of parties this summer with a self-titled LP that shifts from rock to disco to psychedelia without hitting the brakes. Click below to download the band's anthemic "15 to 20," which features guest Lady Tygra rapping like Debbie Harry on Blondie's "Rapture" over a made-for-summer beat.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band is the brainchild of Daniel Collas and Sean Marquand, a pair of New York DJs that went from playing other people's music to having the dance floors packed with their own jams. The duo added friends Patrick Wood, Nicholas Movshon, Luke O'Malley, Laura Marin, Bing Ji Ling, Pier Pappalardo and Joan Tick to their roster, forming the wildly-catchy juggernaut you hear now. On their self-titled debut, the band also recruited the likes of TV on the Radio's Jaleel Bunton, Jon Spencer, Calla's Aurelio Valle, Bart Davenport and Carol C to contribute to the multilayered tracks. The Phenomenal Handclap Band is out June 23rd via Friendly Fire Recordings.

“1999”

Prince | 1982

“I don’t consider myself a great poet,” Prince told Rolling Stone. “I just know I’m here to say what’s on my mind.” In the case of the apocalyptic party anthem “1999,” he was worried about then-president Ronald Reagan’s foreign policies. The song’s melody is based on a riff borrowed from the Mamas and Papas’ “Monday, Monday,” and Prince originally envisioned the first verse with three-part harmony but later split the vocals between himself and members of the Revolution. Because Warner Bros., with whom Prince was locked in a contractual battle, owned the original’s masters, Prince rerecorded the song and appropriately released that version in 1999.
