Eminem "Heated" About Song Leaks, Says He And Dr. Dre Are Back To "Mischievous Ways"

December 12, 2008 8:47 AM ET

Eminem, who's currently in the studio working on Relapse, gave Billboard an album update, saying "Me and Dre are back in the lab like the old days, man." Dr. Dre delayed his own long-awaited Detox to work with Slim Shady on his first album since 2004's Encore. "Just him banging away on tracks and me getting that little spark that makes me write to it," Em says of working with Dre. "Dre will end up producing the majority of the tracks on Relapse. We are up to our old mischievous ways ... let's just leave it at that."

As for the five new songs that have somehow leaked already, Eminem says it's left him "really heated." "It's like someone catches you peeping in your window before you got the Spider Man costume all zipped up! Nobody is supposed to see that," Em said. "We are gonna finish it up though and get it out there how it's supposed to be." As for that rumored Swizz Beatz-produced "Stan" sequel, Eminem said "I haven't worked with Swizz on this album. There isn't a 'Stan 2,' and there won't be. Stan drove his car off a bridge and I'm not writing a song as Stan's ghost. That would just be really corny." Relapse is expected out in the first quarter of 2009.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Nirvana | 1991

"Smells Like Teen Spirit," named after a brand of deodorant marketed to girls, was Kurt Cobain's attempt to "write the ultimate pop song," he said, using the soft-loud dynamic of his favorite band, the Pixies. Cobain "had that dichotomy of punk rage and alienation," the song’s producer, Butch Vig, told Rolling Stone, "but also this vulnerable pop sensibility. In 'Teen Spirit,' a lot of that vulnerability is in the tone of his voice." Sadly, by the time of Nirvana's last U.S. tour, in late '93, Cobain was tortured by the obligation to play "Teen Spirit" every night. "There are many other songs that I have written that are as good, if not better," he claimed.
