"We needed time apart," says Michelle Willams, who used that time to star Aida on Broadway. At the same time, Kelly Rowland topped the charts on a duet with Nelly, and Beyonce starred alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. in The Fighting Temptations. "We've grown musically and emotionally. We ended up with more to write about, and it gave the record more soul."
The trio felt encouraged to begin recording after a performance at Jamaica's Reggae Sunfest in the summer of 2003."It was incredible," Beyonce told Rolling Stone following the concert. "The energy was beautiful. We started talking about what we should do, what our look should be and what the album should sound like. It's always exciting to perform together."
Rodney Jerkins (Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige) produced "Lose My Breath," the album's first single, and the track "Love" hearkens back to the sound and themes that helped make Destiny's Child a household name. "It's about how love has inspired us," says Williams. "My brother Aaron produced it, and the harmonies are absolutely bananas!"
