Atlanta indie rockers Deerhunter will return this fall with Fading Frontier, Bradford Cox and company's follow-up to 2013's Monomania. Cox revealed the band's new album plans and first single "Snakeskin" during a two-hour broadcast on an Atlanta-area AM radio station, which culminated a weekend filled with mysterious countdowns and speculation. Championed as Deerhunter's "most complex, yet accessible, work to date," Fading Frontier arrives October 16th.
Unlike their dark, garage-influenced Monomania, Fading Frontier boasts "brighter" songs and production, "something strikingly balanced, focused on melody and texture," the band promised in a statement. The shift in style is apparent on "Snakeskin," as a funky and faintly psychedelic groove shroud Cox's haunting lyrics before the song loops into a spacey, hypnotic outro in its closing minutes. Deerhunter also shared the song's Valentina Tapia-directed video.
For Fading Frontier, the band reteamed with 2010's Halcyon Digest producer Ben H. Allen, who serves as co-producer on this LP. The album also features contributions from Broadcast's James Cargill, who provides synthesizers and tape manipulation to the cut "Take Care." Eight of Fading Frontier's nine songs were written by Cox in Atlanta, with guitarist Lockett Pundt penning "Ad Astra." Cox and Pundt duet on "Breaker," marking the first time the two have shared lead vocals on a Deerhunter track.
Fading Frontier, whose album cover features a stunning photograph by John Divola (via Stereogum), is available to pre-order now through iTunes and 4AD. The album is also Cox's first from either Deerhunter or his solo project Atlas Sound since the frontman was hospitalized in December 2014 following a car accident that left him in "incredible pain."
Following the album's release, Deerhunter will embark on a month-long tour of Europe that kicks off October 29th at the Pitchfork Festival in Paris and continues on through a November 22nd performance at Utrecht, Netherlands' Le Guess Who Festival. Check out the Deerhunter site for full dates.
