When Chris Stapleton's CMA Awards performance with Justin Timberlake went viral back in November, it catapulted the singer-songwriter out of Nashville and into the mainstream. And a recently announced booking on Saturday Night Live only cements the Traveller artist's crossover.
Stapleton is set to perform on the January 16th episode of SNL, hosted by Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Adam Driver. The appearance makes Stapleton the only country artist to play Saturday Night Live this season, and the first since Zac Brown Band were musical guests last March.
Stapleton also stands as the only country act on the eclectic Coachella lineup. He'll perform at each of the festival's two weekends in April, on a day headlined by DJ Calvin Harris, before returning to the festival grounds for a third consecutive weekend to play at the country-curated Stagecoach Music Festival.
All of the success is still a bit mystifying for Stapleton, who told Rolling Stone Country back in November, that they were surprised by all the sell-outs of his current tour, as well as the emergence of ticket scalpers.
"We booked shows in what we thought. . . [was] really stretching out there. And they sold out really quick," he said. "But we don't know what the new reality is as far as people coming to shows or being curious enough to buy a ticket. Or scalpers trying to charge people $800 a ticket."
Stapleton is set to make a tour stop in Atlanta tonight.
