Brett Dennen’s new album, Smoke and Mirrors, may be the folk-pop singer-songwriter's strongest effort yet. Led by the cheerful, hook-heavy single "Wild Child," Dennen's fifth album shifts gracefully from lilting, breezy pop ("You Make It Easy") to heartfelt balladry ("Only Want You"). The nostalgic "When We Were Young" is also worthy of a listen; its simple, upbeat message urges maturing rock fans to turn up their radios and stay forever young.

Here, you can get an exclusive first listen of Smoke and Mirrors ahead of its October 22nd release on F-Stop/Atlantic. Dennen is currently on the road to support the record and will play a special gig alongside Michael Franti and Spearhead at the KPRI Block Party in San Diego on October 19th. His headlining tour kicks into high gear at Austin's Central Presbyterian Church on October 25th and runs through November 23rd with an already sold-out show at the Triple Door in Seattle.

“Love Is the Answer”

Utopia | 1977

The message of the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" proved to be a universal and long-lasting one, which Utopia revisited 10 years later on this ballad. "From a lyrical standpoint, it's part of a whole class of songs that I write, which are about filial love," Todd Rundgren explained. "I'm not a Christian, but it's called Christian love, the love that people are supposed to naturally feel because we are all of the same species. That may be mythical, but it's still a subject." Though "Love Is the Answer" wasn't a hit, a cover version two years later by England Dan & John Ford Coley peaked at Number Ten on the Billboard singles chart.
